Oracle on Wednesday said it will submit an application programming interface to the Distributed Management Task Force in the latest move to address cloud interoperability.

Cloud interoperability is becoming a big theme for vendors, which are proposing various standards to avoid lock-in.

Oracle’s move comes a week after Intel and a bevy of IT buyers formed a coalition to make clouds interoperable. The Intel effort is called the Open Data Center Alliance.

Oracle’s API focuses on moving cloud resources whether they are public or private. “The API abstracts away from the underlying resources and turns them into logical entities,” said Rex Wang, vice president of product marketing at Oracle. Wang said it submitted its API to the DMTF because it has been around a long time and is a good place to “facilitate discussions.”

Specifically, Oracle submitted its Cloud Elemental Resource Model API to the DMTF. The idea is to have the API considered for the DMTF’s proposed infrastructure as a service cloud standard.

“A lot of companies share this goal of making sure clouds are interoperability and open standards,” said Wang. “It’s the fundamental promise of cloud computing.”

Indeed, you can expect a bevy of upcoming cloud interoperability moves from vendors.
